Our impact centric approach uncovers overlooked value and we are committed to making a difference and empowering entrepreneurs to create sustainable solutions to the world’s most urgent challenges.
The Problem
Governments around the world have set targets for utilities to deliver at least 40% of their electricity from renewable or clean energy sources. However, the intermittent and unpredictable nature of renewable energy generation poses a hurdle to a stable and reliable power supply. The International Energy Agency (IEA) estimates that at least 3,000 gigawatts (GW) of renewable power projects are waiting in grid connection queues, as grid operations have become too complex, volatile and unpredictable for efficient human operation. The power grid has become the bottleneck to utilities’ attainment of energy transition targets.
Utilities are facing significant challenges with grid modernization, from increasing costs related to grid congestion, power outages and unpredictability in the demand and response of distributed energy resources (DER). The grid needs to be rethought, and digital technologies can be leveraged to build a smarter and more reliable grid.
The Solution
Founded by Joshua Wong, ThinkLabs AI is developing a physics-informed digital twin model, supporting human operations by offering autonomous modeling and orchestration of the power grid. These insights enable power grid operators to connect power from renewable sources to the grid faster and more efficiently, alleviating grid connection queues.
Investment Thesis
Joshua Wong leverages a successful track record as an entrepreneur and smart grid expert. He previously founded and led Opus One Solutions until its acquisition by GE Digital in 2021. Having worked with top tier utilities in North America, his continued strong relationship with GE is a unique catalyst that allows ThinkLabs AI to penetrate the market at an unprecedented velocity.
ThinkLabs AI is a specialized AI development and deployment company focused on advanced engineering systems. With their flagship product, ThinkLabs Copilot, using proprietary physics-informed AI digital twins, ThinkLabs AI is well positioned to transform the way grids operate, rich of clean data and predictive power.
Impact
ThinkLabs AI is poised to make a significant impact in line with Amplify's mission of reducing GHG emission by 100 million tonnes by 2030. We are seeing an unprecedented acceleration of the electrification of the industry, pressuring the power grids and its legacy infrastructure, often 80 to 100 years old. Combining demand pressures and the increased use of varying sources of renewable energy, the grid is under a lot of pressure, with its reliability and resiliency becoming more critical than ever. By disrupting the way the grids operate, ThinkLabs is playing a catalytic role in enabling a faster and more efficient energy transition and grid modernization.
In 2023, in the US, 4,178 billion kilowatt hours were generated, with only 21% coming from renewable sources while non-renewable sources emit approximately 1.6B tonnes of CO2 emissions. The shift toward renewable energy is mandatory to achieve net-zero targets by 2050.
The whole world benefits from a decarbonized planet and a resilient power grid. Power outages are estimated to cost the US economy $150 billion every year, affecting critical sectors, including healthcare, transportation and education. ThinkLabs optimization and predictive capabilities will minimize losses and increase the reliability of the electric grid.
Disrupting the energy transition and the way grid operates today will have deep and lasting impact on a very large scale:
SDG 7 Affordable and Clean Energy: Ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all. More precisely, addressing target 7.2 by unlocking and accelerating the adoption of renewable energy and electricity as the main source of power.
SDG 9 Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure: Build resilient infrastructure, promote inclusive and sustainable industrialization and foster innovation. More precisely, addressing target 9.4 by upgrading infrastructure and the digitalisation of the grid, unlocking and accelerating the adoption of clean and renewable energy in the economy.
SDG 13 Climate Action: Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impact. Precisely, addressing both Target 13.1 and 13.2 by reducing the GHG emission from non-renewable sources of energy and increasing resiliency of the electric grid.
